Serving Size Adjustment is Applied Across All Items in Meal Service/Menu Category
There will be times when a person’s serving size needs to be reduced or increased. For example, a person receives half portions of beverages because they are on a fluid restriction, or if a person receives two servings of entrées because they require increased proteins.
In the MealSutie system, a service size adjustment is applied to all items in a meal service (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and menu category combination. There are two methods to adjust the serving size of a meal service/menu category combination (both achieve the same effect):
- Method 1 - Adjusting Serving Size for Meal Service/Menu Category via the Settings Tool
- Method 2 - Adjusting Serving Size for Meal Service/Menu Category via an Item
Note: Serving size adjustments for a meal/category combination are not applied to any personal menu items in that meal/category combination. To adjust the serving size of a personal menu item, see Adjusting Serving Size of a Personal Menu Item
Method 1 - Adjusting Serving Size for a Meal/Category Combination via the Personal Menu Settings Tool
To adjust the serving size for a meal service/menu category of a personal menu, complete the following steps:
- Open the person’s personal menu.
- At the top right corner, click the settings tool. The customization slide-out panel appears.
- The Diet Order field by default displays the person’s currently-assigned diet order (diet type and texture type), which is indicated by the blue user icon. You can only add a personal customization to the person’s currently assigned diet order, so therefore ensure it is selected in the Diet Order field.
If the person’s currently-assigned diet order consists of different texture types for meal services and snack times, then those texture types (combined with the primary diet type) are available in the Diet Order field with the blue user icon, as per screenshot below. Therefore personal customizations can be added to them. (For more on what diet orders are displayed in the Diet Order field, see Viewing Personal Menu Customization Grid > Diet Order Field). - Click Add New > Serving Size Adjustment. The Serving Size Adjustment pop-up appears.
- In the Meals field, select what meal services and snack times to apply the serving size adjustment.
Note: If the person’s currently-assigned diet order consists of different texture types for meal services and snack times, then those texture types (combined with the primary diet type) are available from the Diet Order field for you to select (step 3 above). Therefore, the Meals field in the pop-up therefore only displays the meal services/snack times the selected texture type is associated with.
- In the Menu Categories field, select the menu categories to apply the serving size adjustment. Note: A menu category is available from the Menu Categories field if it is assigned to each meal/snack that is selected in the Meals field. Therefore, if a category is not available, then from the Meals field remove the meal/snack the category is not assigned to. For example, if not seeing the Vegetables menu category, remove Breakfast from the Meals field (because the Vegetables menu category is not assigned to Breakfast).
- In the Serving Size Adjustment field, select the required serving size adjustment.
- Click the Save button to apply the serving size adjustments to the item’s meal service/menu category combination.
- A menu category whose serving size has been adjusted displays the adjusted sizes in parentheses for each of its items.
Method 2 - Adjusting Serving Size for a Meal Service/Menu Category via an Item
As noted above, service size adjustments are applied to a meal service (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and menu category combination. Therefore if you adjust the serving size of a meal service/menu category via an item, then that adjustment is applied to all items in the meal service and menu category that the item belong to.
To adjust the serving size for a meal service/menu category on a personal menu by opening an item, complete the following steps:
-
Open the person’s personal menu.
- For the meal service/menu category that requires a serving size adjustment, click one of its items. The Customize pop-up window appears.
- Click the Serving Size icon (
). The Serving Size Adjustment pop-up appears.
- Select the serving size from the Serving Size Adjustment field.
- Click the Save button to apply the serving size adjustments to the item’s meal service/menu category combination.

FAQs
Can I adjust the serving size of a single item and not all items in a meal service/menu category?
No.
However, the serving size of a personal menu item, a specific substitute, and a fallback substitute item can be individually adjusted without affecting the other items in the meal service/menu category that the item belongs to.
When adjusting the portion size for a meal/menu category, a menu category is not showing/not available?
A menu category is available from the Menu Categories field if it is assigned to each meal/snack that is selected in the Meals field. Therefore, if a category is not available, then from the Meals field remove the meal/snack the category is not assigned to. For example, if not seeing the Vegetables menu category, remove Breakfast from the Meals field (because the Vegetables menu category is not assigned to Breakfast).
