Overview of Menu Item Extensions (i.e., Therapeutic Substitutes)
When a recipe is added to a menu, and that menu supports extended recipes (i.e., an extended menu), the recipe's extensions will copy over.
After a recipe is added to a menu, it is now a menu item, and as such you can alter the extensions that are specific to the menu item (see Working in a Menu Item Extension Grid). This means that the extensions on the menu item will be different from its associated recipe, and that the menu item extensions take precedence over the recipe extensions.
Logic of how the System Selects a Recipe for Resident/Patient
When a resident or patient is assigned a diet type and/or texture type, the logic of how the system determines what recipe to serve is as follows:
- The system checks the profile’s assigned diet type and texture type.
- The system checks the extension grid for the menu item, and cross-references the diet type row with the texture type column to select the recipe in that cross-referenced cell.
- The system assigns the recipe from that cell to the personal menu for the profile.
For example, if the profile is assigned Diet Type B and Texture Type C, then the recipe from that cross-referenced cell in the extension grid is selected.
Synching Extensions Between Recipe and Menu Item
When the extensions differ between a menu item and its associated recipe, there is the ability to synch the extensions. See the following article for information and instructions on synching: Synching Extensions Between Recipe and Menu Item.
