About Modifiers for IO and AO Screens

For instant ordering (IO) and advanced ordering (AO) in the Touch app, modifiers in the form of extras or notes can be added to an ordered item.

Modifiers are added via a modifier grid (aka static modifiers). A modifier grid consists of the tiles that contain the extras or notes that can be added to an ordered item. For example, tiles for each condiment (ketchup, mustard, relish), tiles for cook methods (rare, medium rare, well done), tiles for beverage modifications (no ice, extra ice), etc. Modifiers added to an ordered item display on the KMS screens and printed order tickets. 

In addition, a modifier grid allows for the portion size to be adjusted for the item.

Warning: Modifiers that are added to ordered items will not reflect a resident or patient’s personal menu. Therefore, before building a modifier grid, it is recommended to first discuss your needs and goals with your dietary team to determine what modifiers to include in the grid.

How Does a Modifier Grid Work on the IO and AO screens?

  1. When an item is added to a diner’s order, you tap or click the order, and the modifier grid appears (second screenshot below).

  2. Tap or click the modifier to add to the modifier to the item, which displays indented with a bullet point below the item.

  3. You can also adjust the portion size on the modifier grid. The portion size is displayed to the left of the item.

Creating a Modifier Grid for IO and AO Screens

Step 1: Creating the Modifier Grid

  1. In the Core system, select Settings from the left navigation sidebar. The Settings panel appears to the right. 
     
  2. From the Settings panel, select Service Settings > Smart Service Settings > Macro Grids. The Macro Grids screen appears. 
     
  3. Click the Add Macro Grid button. The Add Macro Grid pop-up appears.

  4. In the Grid Name field, enter a name for the grid. For example, “IO Modifiers”.
     
  5. Click the Save and Continue button. The grid screen appears for the newly-added grid.

Step 2: Adding Modifier Tiles to a Modifier Grid

With the modifier grid created (as per steps above), your next steps are to add the modifier tiles to the grid. To do so, complete the following steps:

  1. A separate modifier grid needs to be built for each meal period: breakfast, lunch, dinner. Click the meal period tab (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) for the meal period you want add modifier tiles to. You will see that the grid has 16 available tiles for you to build on.
     
  2. For the first tile on the grid, click its Add button. The Add Tile to [Meal] screen appears.

  3. Ensure the Modifier option is selected.
     
  4. In the Name field, enter the name of the modifier. For example, if the tile is to add the condiment of ketchup to the ordered item, enter Ketchup.
     
  5. If you want the modifier name to be editable on the front-end IO or AO screen by a server, then select the Open Text Modifier (Staff can change the note or enter their own) check box.  
     
  6. When a ticket appears onscreen (IO screen, AO screen, KMS stations screen), the modifiers can be highlighted a specific colour.
    • To assign a colour to the modifier when it appears on an IO or AO screen, select the screen colour that you want to apply: Teal, Green, Purple, Blue, or Pink. 
    • To assign a colour to the modifier when it appears on a KMS station screen, select the KMS colour that you want to apply: Red, Mid Green, Light Green, Amber, Orange, Light Blue, Light Teal, Mid Purple, Light Purple, Dark Pink. 
       
  7. The tile can be assigned an image that displays on the IO or AO ordering screen. The image that you can assign is from a system library of default images (i.e., you cannot assign your own image). To assign a system image:
    1. Click the Select Image link. The Add Image to modifier window appears. 
    2. Select the desired image.
    3. Click the Add Image button. The image is added to the tile.

  8. Click the Save Modifier button.
     
  9. You are returned to the main page, where the newly-added tile appears. Note that the top of the tile is Modifier.

  10. Repeat the above steps to add other modifier tiles.

Creating a Subpage Tile on an Existing Grid (Optional)

About a Subpage Tile

A tile in a grid can be configured as a subpage, which in turn exposes another 16-tile grid. A subpage allows another means to organize modifiers and is also is a solution to deal with situations in which the original 16-tile grid is going to max out.

For example, you can create a subpage titled “Cook Methods”, which contains individual cook method tiles, such as “Rare”, “Medium Rare”, etc. Another example of a subpage is “Beverage Modifications”, which contains individual tiles such as “No Ice”, “Extra ice”, etc.

When a subpage tile exists on a grid, then when that subpage tile is tapped or tapped on the IO or AO screen (first screenshot below), then the items with the subpage appear for the user to add to the ordered item (second screenshot below).

Creating a Subpage Tile on an Existing Grid

To create a subpage tile on an existing grid, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the grid. 
  2. Select the tab of the desired meal period (Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner) to add the subpage tile to. 
  3. For the tile on the grid to be configured as a subpage, click its Add link (first screenshot below). The Add Tile to [Meal] screen appears (second screenshot below).

  4. Click the Sub page option. The screen refreshes accordingly.

  5. Enter a name for the subpage tile. For example "Beverage Modifications". 
     
  6. When a ticket appears on an IO screen or AO screen, a subpage tile can be highlighted a colour. To assign a colour to the modifier when it appears on an IO or AO screen, select the colour that you want to apply: Red, Mid Green, Light Green, Amber, Orange, Light Blue, Light Teal, Mid Purple, Light Purple, Dark Pink. 
     
  7. The subpage tile can be assigned an image that displays on the IO or AO ordering screen. The image that you can assign is from a system library of default images (i.e., you cannot assign your own image). To assign a system image:
    1. Click the Select Image link. The Add Image to modifier window appears. 
    2. Select the desired image.
    3. Click the Add Image button. The image is added to the tile. 
       
  8. Click the Save Sub-Page and Add Modifier button. The grid screen appears for the newly-added subpage.

  9. Add the modifier tiles to the subpage as needed (as per the Creating a Tile instructions above). 
     
  10. After adding the tiles to the subpage, click the Back to [Grid Name] link at the top left of the screen.

  11. In the grid, the newly-added subpage tile is listed. Note that the top of the tile is Sub-Page.

Applying a Modifier Grid for IO

To apply a modifier grid for IO screens:

  1. In the Core system, select Settings from the left navigation sidebar. The Settings panel appears to the right. 
  2. From the Settings panel, select Service Settings > Smart Service Settings > Configuration. The Configuration screen appears.
  3. Click the Edit icon (i.e., pencil icon). The screen refreshes and the available fields can now be edited.

  4. Scroll to the Modifier Grid section.

  5. From the Optional modifier grid for Instant Ordering drop-down, select the modifier grid to enable.
  6. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and select the Save Changes button to apply your changes.

Applying a Modifier Grid for AO

To apply a modifier grid for AO screens:

  1. In the Core system, select Settings from the left navigation sidebar. The Settings panel appears to the right. 
  2. From the Settings panel, select Service Settings > Smart Service Settings > Configuration. The Configuration screen appears.
  3. Click the Edit icon (i.e., pencil icon). The screen refreshes and the available fields can now be edited.

  4. Scroll to the Modifier Grid section.

  5. From the Optional modifier grid for Advance Ordering drop-down, select the modifier grid to enable.
  6. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and select the Save Changes button to apply your changes.

Opening an Existing Grid for Editing

To open an existing grid to make edits, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Core system, select Settings from the left navigation sidebar. The Settings panel appears to the right. 
  2. From the Settings panel, select Service Settings > Smart Service Settings > Macro Grids. The Macro Grids screen appears. 
  3. Click the grid name link of grid you want to edit. Make your edits to the grid as necessary. 

Positioning Tiles on a Grid

The order in which the modifier tiles are displayed on a grid can be adjusted. To do so, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the grid. 
  2. For a tile to be moved, hover over it and click and hold its grid icon. 
  3. Move the tile to the desired location in the grid. The changes are automatically applied.

Accessing Modifiers Tiles of a Subpage Tile

To access the modifiers tiles of a subpage tile, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the grid. 
  2. For the subpage whose modifier tiles you want to access, click its Go To Sub-Page link.

Deleting a Modifier Tile from a Grid

To delete a modifier tile on an existing grid:

  1. Open the grid. 
  2. For the tile to be deleted, hover over it and click its trash icon (first screenshot below). A confirmation message appears (second screenshot below).

  3. Click Yes, Delete Tile to remove the tile. 

Changing Name of a Grid

To change the name of an existing grid:

  1. Open the grid. 
  2. Click the edit icon beside the grid name (first screenshot below). The Edit Macro grid pop-up appears (second screenshot below).

  3. Enter the new name in the Grid Name field.
  4. Click Save and Continue to apply your changes. 

FAQs

Are modifiers sent to the KMS to display on tickets?

Yes. Modifiers are sent to the KMS to display on tickets (both an onscreen ticket and a printed ticket).  

Can a subpage tile be created in another subpage tile?

No. The system does not allow a subpage tile to be contained in another subpage tile.
