Marking an Individual Item as DNS for a Resident/Patient
To mark an individual item as do not serve (e.g., coffee) for a resident/patient, complete the following steps:
- Open the person’s personal menu.
- For the item to mark as DNS, hover over the item and click its Edit icon (
). The Edit Menu Item modal appears (second screenshot below).
-
Click the Do Not Serve option. The modal refreshes to indicate the item is DNS.
- Click the Save button to apply your changes and close the modal. The item appears as DNS on the personal menu.
Note: To display DNS items on the personal menu (i.e., crossed out), ensure the Display Excluded Items option is selected from the Display Options.
Can I set an item as DNS for a specific day?
No. An item cannot be set to "do not serve" for only a specific day.
A workaround is to add a personal menu item for the day and meal period, and select the Instead of Menu Items option. See Adding a Personal Menu Item.
Marking a Meal Period or Snack Time as DNS for a Resident/Patient
A meal period (breakfast, lunch, dinner) or snack time (snack am, snack pm, snack hs) can be marked as do not serve (DNS) on a resident/patient's personal menu. To do so, complete the following steps:

- From the top left of the screen, select Add New > Do Not Serve. The Add Do Not Serve modal appears.
- Ensure the Menu Categories option is selected.

- In the Menu Categories field, select all the menu categories.
- Click the Add button to apply your changes and close the modal. The items in the meal period appear as DNS on the personal menu.
Note: To display DNS items on the personal menu (i.e., crossed out), ensure the Display Excluded Items option is selected from the Display Options.
Marking a Menu Category (or Categories) of a Meal Period/Snack Time as DNS for a Resident/Patient
A menu category (or multiple categories) of a meal period or snack time can be marked as do not serve (DNS) for a resident/patient's personal menu, meaning all items in that menu category will be marked as DNS. For example, do not serve juice (menu category) at breakfast (meal period).
To mark a menu category for a meal period/snack time as DNS, complete the following steps:
- Open the person’s personal menu.
- From the top left of the screen, select Add New > Do Not Serve. The Add Do Not Serve modal appears.
-
Ensure the Menu Categories option is selected.
- In the Meals field, select the meal period or snack times of the menu category to be marked as do not serve.
- In the Menu Categories field, select the menu category (or multiple categories) to mark as DNS.
-
Click the Add button to apply your changes and close the modal. The items in the menu category for the meal period/snack time appear as DNS on the personal menu.
Note: To display DNS items on the personal menu (i.e., crossed out), ensure the Display Excluded Items option is selected from the Display Options.
Marking a Preference Group as DNS for a Resident/Patient
A preference group (or multiple preference groups) can be marked as do not serve (DNS) for a resident/patient's personal menu, meaning all items in the preference group will be marked as DNS for the resident/patient. To mark a preference group as DNS, complete the following steps:
- Open the person’s personal menu.
- From the top left of the screen, select Add New > Do Not Serve. The Add Do Not Serve modal appears.
-
Select the Preference Groups option. The modal refreshes accordingly.
- From the Preference Groups field, select the desired preference group or groups to mark as DNS (e.g., the milk preference group). Note that if a desired preference group is not available, see Don't See a Preference Group? below.
- Click the Add button to apply your changes and close the modal. Any items associated with the selected preference group(s) are crossed out to indicate they are do not serve.
Note: To display DNS items on the personal menu (i.e., crossed out), ensure the Display Excluded Items option is selected from the Display Options.
Don't See a Desired Preference Group?
If a desired preference group is not available to mark as a "do not serve", then first confirm if the preference group is available in your account for use; see Displaying the Preference Groups Available to your Account.
If the desired preference group is available in your account, it could be that it is unpublished. If so, an unpublished preference group is not available to be marked as a do not serve. If your account owns the preference group, then you can republish it; see Republishing an Unpublished Preference Group. If your parent account instead owns the preference group, then your account will not be able to republish it; please reach out to your parent account for them to publish the preference group.
You also have the option of creating a preference group and adding items to it. To do so, see Creating a Preference Group, and then Preference Group: Adding Ingredients, Prepared Foods, Recipes.
Removing a DNS Customization
-
Open the resident/patient's personal menu.
-
Click the Manage Customizations button to open the Manage Customizations window.
- For the DNS customization to be removed, click its remove icon (
). A confirmation message appears. Click Delete to the confirmation message.
Removing a DNS for an Individual Item (Alternative Method)
A DNS for an individual item can be removed via the Manage Customizations window, as per instructions above. An alternative method to remove the DNS for an individual item is as follows:
-
Open the resident/patient's personal menu.
- For the DNS item, hover it and click its Edit icon (
). The Edit Menu Item modal appears (second screenshot below).
- For the existing like DNS preference, click its Remove link. The modal refreshes to indicate that the item is no longer DNS.
Note: If the item was marked as DNS as a result of a meal period, or menu category or preference group being marked as a DNS, then a message appears to indicate such. If you proceed to remove the DNS by clicking the Yes, Remove button, the DNS will also be removed from all other associated items originally marked as DNS by the meal period, menu category or preference group.
- Click Save to apply your changes and close the modal.
