Viewing Nutrition Content of a Recipe (i.e., Nutrition Facts Label)
To view the nutrition content of a recipe (i.e., Nutrition Facts label), complete the following steps:
-
Open the recipe and click the Nutritional Content tab. The Nutrition Facts label is displayed (screenshot below).
What Determines the Serving Size on the Nutrition Facts Label?
- If Portion Size is a Volume Measurement in Millilitres
- If Portion Size is a Volume Measurement in Anything but Millilitres
- If Portion Size is a Weight
- If Portion Size is a Special Unit of Measure
If Portion Size is a Volume Measurement in Millilitres
If the Portion Size of the recipe is a volume measurement in millilitres, then the Nutrition Facts label displays the portion size in millilitres.
If Portion Size is a Volume Measurement in Anything but Millilitres
If the Portion Size of the recipe is a volume measurement in anything but millilitres (i.e., cups, fluid ounces, quarts, litres, etc.), then the Nutrition Facts label displays the portion size followed by the equivalent millilitres in parentheses.
If Portion Size is a Weight
If the Portion Size is a weight measurement (i.e., ounces, grams, etc.), then the Nutrition Facts label displays the portion size followed by the estimated serving size in parentheses. The estimated serving size is the sum of the edible portion of each ingredient divided by the yield. See Understanding Estimated Serving Size of a Recipe for more information.
If Portion Size is a Special Unit of Measure
If the Portion Size is using a special unit of measure (e.g., “each” or “slice”), then the nutrition facts label displays the portion size as a special unit of measure followed by the estimated serving size in parentheses. The estimated serving size is the sum of the edible portion of each ingredient divided by the yield. See Understanding Estimated Serving Size of a Recipe for more information.
Viewing All Nutrient Values (i.e., Nutrient Values View)
To view all the nutrient values, click the Nutrient Values link and the Nutrient Values window appears. The nutrient values are based on one portion size of the recipe.
Note that at the top of the Nutrient Values window is the Change Portion Size tool, which you can use to change the portion size to update the nutrient values accordingly.
Quick Method of Accessing Nutrient Values
On the Recipes Listing screen, you can click the gear icon for a recipe and select Nutrient Analysis to display the Nutrient Values window.
Viewing Nutrient Values per Ingredient (i.e., Nutrient Analysis View)
To view the nutrient values of each ingredient in the recipe, click the Detail Nutrient Analysis link, and the Nutrient Analysis window appears. Use the scroll bar at the bottom to scroll through the nutrients.
Nutrient Value Calculations
The Estimated Serving Size (ESS) is Used to Calculate Nutrient Values
Nutrient values are calculated based on the estimated serving size (ESS). The estimated serving size is the sum of the edible portion (EP) amount of all ingredients divided by the serving number. See Understanding Estimated Serving Size of a Recipe for more information.
- If the ESS is increased (by decreasing the serving number or increasing ingredient amounts) then the nutrient values increase accordingly.
- If the ESS is decreased (by increasing the serving number or decreasing ingredient amounts) then the nutrient values decrease accordingly.
How is a Nutrient Value Calculated for a Recipe?
A value for an individual nutrient in a recipe is the sum of that nutrient value from each ingredient in the recipe. The Nutrient Analysis window shows the individual nutrient values for each ingredient. In the example screenshot of the Nutrient Analysis window below, the Sodium total from each ingredient is 298.2 mg, which is rounded up and displayed as 300 mg on the Nutrition Facts label (second screenshot below).
How are Calories Calculated?
The total calories for a recipe is the sum of the calories from each ingredient in the recipe. The Nutrient Analysis window shows the individual calorie values for each ingredient. In the example screenshot of the Nutrient Analysis window below, the calories from each ingredient add up to 190.34, which is rounded down and displayed as 190 on the Nutrition Facts label (second screenshot below).
How Does a Recipe Pulls its Nutrient Values?
The food items (ingredients and prepared foods) that are included in a recipe are associated with one or more vendor products that are verified to match with the food item.
From a food item's associated vendor products, one is selected for that food item, which in turn determines the nutritional content of the food and the nutritional content of a recipe for which the food is an ingredient.
The system will automatically select the vendor product for the food item via its product-item selection logic. However, If needed you can manually select a different product for the food item. For more information, see the following articles:
FAQs
The Nutrition Facts label for my recipe is blank?
If the Nutrition Facts label for a recipe is blank, it most likely means that the portion size for the recipe is a special unit of measure (SUoM), such as "Each" or "Slice", and there is no weight or volume amount defined for the SUoM. Click here to define a weight or volume amount for a SUoM.
