What is a Diet Intervention?
A diet intervention can contain one or more customizations and is assigned to a resident/patient to automatically update their personal menu with those customizations. The benefit of a diet intervention is that it can contain multiple customizations, which prevents the need to individually assign each customization to a resident/patient profile on their personal menu.
For example, assume a diet intervention contains two customizations for the HiPro HiCal diet type: one to increase the serving size and one to add a supplement at dinner. When a resident is assigned the HiPro HiCal diet type, then the diet intervention can be assigned to the resident, which in turn automatically updates their personal menu by adding the serving size increase and the supplement for dinner.
The following customizations can be included in a diet intervention:
-
Personal Item - a personal item is an offering that is added to a person’s personal menu.
-
Fallback Substitute - a fallback substitute is an item added to a resident/patient's personal menu for a specific instance (day, meal period/snack time, and menu category). In the event an item cannot be served for that instance, then the fallback substitute is automatically available.
-
Serving Size Adjustment - there will be times when a person’s serving size needs to be reduced or increased. For example, a person receives half portions of beverages because they are on a fluid restriction, or if a person receives two servings of entrées because they require increased proteins.
-
Do Not Serve - there is the ability to mark the following as do not serve:
- A meal period (breakfast, lunch, dinner) or snack time (snack am, snack pm, snack hs) can be marked as do not serve.
- A menu category of a meal period or snack time can me marked as do not serve.
- A preference group can be marked as do not serve.
How is a Diet Intervention Triggered?
A diet intervention is associated with a diet type/texture type combination, and then assigned to a resident/patient profile who is assigned the same diet type/texture type combination. Because the diet intervention and the resident have the same diet type/texture type combination, the customizations of the diet intervention will apply.
Note: A diet intervention cannot be assigned to a resident/patient with a liquid diet type, NPO or tube feeding. A diet intervention can only be assigned to resident/patients with an assigned diet type and texture type.
Other Benefits of a Diet Intervention
Because a diet intervention is associated with a diet type/texture type combination, it can be assigned to multiple resident/patients who have the same diet type/texture type and the same needs, which therefore prevents the need to individually customize each personal menu.
Viewing Diet Interventions Available to Your Account
Diet interventions created by corporate parents accounts are available for facility accounts to assign to residents and patients. In addition, a facility account can create their own diet interventions.
To view the current diet interventions available to your account, complete the following steps:
- From the left navigation sidebar, select Tools & Setup > Diet Orders. The Diet Order Setting screen appears.
- Select the Interventions tab. The Diet Interventions screen appears, listing any existing interventions.
- To view the details of an intervention (i.e., its selected diet/texture type combinations and the customizations), click the name of the intervention. The intervention slide-out panel appears.
How do I know which diet interventions are active?
When viewing the Diet Interventions screen, the Status column indicates if the diet intervention is currently published (i.e., active) or not (i.e., inactive). An unpublished diet intervention is not available to be assigned to resident/patient profiles. See the following article for more information: Unpublishing or Publishing a Diet Intervention.
Reports and Diet Interventions
At this time there is no report that lists the diet interventions that residents/patients are assigned to. However, on the People Listing screen, you can display resident/patients with an assigned diet intervention and then export that list to an Excel® spreadsheet. To do so:
- Open the People Listing screen.
- Ensure the Diet Intervention column is set to display.
- Sort the people list by clicking the Diet Intervention column header to display all resident/patients with an assigned diet intervention at the top of the list.
- Export the onscreen list to an Excel® file.
Also note that the following people reports allow the name of assigned diet interventions to be printed on a ticket/label/menu:
- Tray Card Ticket Report (People) - lists Dietary Needs (no Food)
- Tray Menu Tickets Report (People) - for Non-Select & Advance Ordering
- Person-Specific Select Menus Report (People) - for Table Select & Advance Ordering
- Snack Delivery Worksheet (People)
- Stickers (People) - for Personal Items, Snacks or Identification
