How a Fluid Recipe is Served
When a resident or patient is assigned a fluid type, the logic of how the system determines what to serve is as follows:
First Stage: System Selects a Recipe from the Menu Item Extension Grid
- The system checks the profile’s assigned diet type and texture type.
- The system checks the menu item extension grid for the regular item, and cross-references the diet type row with the texture type column to select the recipe in that cross-referenced cell.
Therefore, if the profile is assigned the regular diet type/texture type, then the regular recipe is selected. However, if the profile is assigned a non-regular diet type/texture type, then the recipe from that cross-referenced cell is selected.
Second Stage: System References the Fluid Substitution Grid of the Selected Recipe
- The system references the fluid substitution grid of the recipe that was selected in the first stage.
- From that fluid sub grid, the system assigns the recipe to the personal menu for the profile.
Therefore, if the profile is assigned the regular diet type/texture type, then the fluid substitution grid of the regular recipe is referenced.
However, if the profile is assigned a non-regular diet type/texture type, then the fluid substitution grid of the selected recipe is referenced.
If in the fluid sub grid of the selected recipe there is no recipe for the profile's fluid type, then the selected recipe from the menu item extension grid is served to the personal menu for the profile.
FAQs
Why is the fluid recipe I extended for my regular recipe not being served?
When a patient/resident is assigned a diet order that is not a regular diet type/regular texture type, then the system will not reference the fluid substitution grid of the regular recipe. Instead the system references the fluid substitution grid of the substitute recipe that was selected for the person's assigned diet order.
For example, assume a profile is assigned diet type B and texture type A. The following logic occurs:
- The system checks the menu item extension grid for the regular item, and cross-references diet type row B with texture type column A to select the substitute recipe in that cell.
- The system references the fluid sub grid of the selected substitute recipe--not the regular recipe! Therefore one of the following scenarios occur:
- If in the fluid sub grid of the selected substitute recipe there is no recipe for the profile's fluid type, then the selected substitute recipe from the menu item extension grid is served to the personal menu for the profile.
or
- If in the fluid sub grid of the selected substitute recipe there is a recipe for the profile's fluid type, then the recipe from the fluid sub grid is served to the personal menu for the profile.
- If in the fluid sub grid of the selected substitute recipe there is no recipe for the profile's fluid type, then the selected substitute recipe from the menu item extension grid is served to the personal menu for the profile.
To see the substitute recipes being served for a menu for a specific diet order/texture type, see either Viewing Offerings for Diet/Texture Types on WaaG View or Viewing Offerings for Diet/Texture Types on Menu Day View.
From there, you can open the substitute recipe (see Opening the Recipe of a Menu Item) to access its fluid substitution grid and make changes as needed. To do so see Extending a Recipe with Fluid Recipe Substitutes.
