Adjusting Serving Size for a Resident/Patient's Personal Menu

Serving Size Adjustment is Applied Across All Items in Meal Period/Menu Category

There will be times when a resident/patient's serving size needs to be reduced or increased. For example, a patient receives half portions of beverages because they are on a fluid restriction, or if a patient receives two servings of entrées because they require increased proteins.

In the MealSuite system, a service size adjustment is applied to all items in a meal period (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and menu category combination. 

Note: Serving size adjustments for a meal/category combination are not applied to any personal menu items in that meal/category combination. To adjust the serving size of a personal menu item, see Adjusting Serving Size of a Personal Menu Item. 

Adjusting Serving Size for a Meal/Category Combination 

To adjust the serving size for a meal service/menu category of a personal menu, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the person’s personal menu.
  2. From the top left of the screen, select Add New > Serving Size Adjustment. The Serving Size Adjustment modal appears.

  3. In the Meals field, select what meal services and snack times to apply the serving size adjustment.

  4. In the Menu Categories field, select the menu categories to apply the serving size adjustment.

    Note: A menu category shows from the Menu Categories field if it is assigned to each meal/snack that is selected in the Meals field. Therefore, if a category is not showing, then from the Meals field deselect the meal/snack the category is not assigned to. For example, if not seeing the Vegetables menu category, remove Breakfast from the Meals field (because the Vegetables menu category is not assigned to Breakfast).

  5. In the Serving Size Adjustment field, select the required serving size adjustment.
  6. Click the Add button to apply the serving size adjustments to the item’s meal service/menu category combination.
  7. A menu category whose serving size has been adjusted displays the adjusted sizes for each of its items, with the original sizes crossed out.

    Note: To display the portion size for items on a personal menu, ensure the Show Portion Sizes check box is selected from the Display Options. 

Removing a Serving Size Adjustment from a Personal Menu

If you no longer require the serving size adjustment as a personal menu customization, then you can either put the customization on hold (to be activated later if required) or delete the customization. Adjusting Serving Size of a Personal Menu Item

To adjust the serving size of a personal menu item, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the resident/patient's personal menu.
  2. For the personal menu item to be adjusted, hover over it and click its Edit icon (edit_icon.png). The Edit Personal Menu Item window appears (second screenshot below).

  3. In the Amount field, adjust the serving size as needed, and click Save. 

Adjusting Serving Size of a Specific Substitute or a Fallback Substitute

To adjust the serving size of a specific substitute or a fallback substitute, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the resident/patient's personal menu.
  2. For the substitute to be adjusted, hover over it and click its Edit icon (edit_icon.png). The Edit Substitute window appears.
  3. In the Amount field, enter the new serving size.

  4. Click Save to apply your changes. 

FAQs

Can I adjust the serving size of a single item and not all items in a meal service/menu category?

No.

However, the serving size of a personal menu item, a specific substitute, and a fallback substitute item can be individually adjusted without affecting the other items in the meal service/menu category that the item belongs to. 

I made a serving size adjustment for a resident/patient with the AO service type; however the tray menu ticket or production report does not reflect the adjustment?

If you made a serving size adjustment for a resident/patient with the AO service type, and that adjustment is not reflected on the tray menu ticket or production report, then it means the order is a reuse order. A reuse order will not reflect a serving size adjustment. For the serving size adjustment to be reflected, the order needs to be retaken in the Touch app. 

Is there a report that captures the serving size adjustments assigned across resident/patients?

Yes. The Meal Service (People) report lists service details, including serving size adjustments, assigned across a group of selected residents/patients.
